Loon Island is located in Steenburg Lake just east of highway 62 and about 30 minutes south of Bancroft, Ontario. According to the tax rolls, Loon Island Lodge was founded in 1923. Under it's current owners the lodge functions as a 7/8 season resort with the first 3/4 consisting of regular use from spring through fall and the remaining 1/8 being the occasional winter weekend.

Our first attempted winter weekend was New Year's several years ago now. The temperature dropped to -35° C that night and the water jug sitting next to the wood cookstove froze solid. That was when we found out that the lodge wasn't nearly as well insulated as we had hoped. It was only last year when working on some major kitchen renovations that we discovered that those walls weren't actually insulated at all.
