Day Five
This would be our last full day in the park. It's usually the day we head across Clydegale and up the South Madawaska to nice spot out of the wind for lunch and a nap in the sun. We lazed around most of the morning and didn't really get going anywhere until after lunch. Since we had already fished Clydegale this year, the rest of the guys decided to head off to do some bushwacking looking for a small lake that shows on the map between Pen and Clydegale. I wasn't quite ready to give up on the fishing and I had a hunch that the Brookies would be starting to bite. Besides the hunch, I'd also promised my younger son that I'd bring him home a trout for his birthday and I didn't have one for him yet.
I headed back over to the pool at the bottom of Pen Lake by the portage to Clydegale. This was an easy paddle from our campsite and I didn't have to fight the wind at all. When I got to the pool there was no one else around. I tied up to an old log and then sat and fished in the sun for about 3 hours. It was dead quiet sitting there, one of those golden moments that you get when you're off by yourself in the wilderness. One of those times that remind you why you go to all the effort to canoe or hike in somewhere that you can't get to by car. The fishing was good too, I caught six Specks over that 3 hours, including a keeper to take home to my son.
